GUIDES

Diamond Guides

At Mak & Co., we recognise the significance of making the perfect diamond choice. We're here to provide valuable insights, from the significance of GIA diamonds to detailed expertise on the fundamental 4Cs, all shared directly from our team of in-house gemologists.

The 4Cs

The 4Cs represent the core attributes used to assess and define a diamond's quality.

Carat, the most familiar of the 4Cs, denotes the diamond's weight and size. However, it's essential to understand that a diamond's value isn't solely based on its size but also on its cut, color, and clarity.

Cut determines a diamond's sparkle and brilliance. It involves the precision of how the diamond is shaped and faceted, affecting how light interacts with it. A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, resulting in enhanced sparkle and allure.

Color grading measures the absence of color in a diamond. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamonds on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colorless diamonds are highly sought after due to their rarity and ability to refract light, creating a dazzling display.

Clarity assesses the presence of imperfections, known as inclusions and blemishes, within the diamond. GIA grades diamonds from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions visible to the naked eye).

Coloured Gemstones

Colored gemstones, revered for their vivid hues and individuality, serve as exquisite centerpieces in various jewellery pieces, including engagement rings. These captivating stones encompass a vast spectrum of colors, ranging from deep blues and fiery reds to vibrant greens and soft pastels. Each gemstone holds its allure, bringing forth a distinct personality and charm.

Sapphires, renowned for their striking blue tones, also exist in a myriad of other colors like yellow, pink, and even colorless. Rubies, with their intense red hue, symbolise passion and romance. Emeralds, treasured for their lush green color, evoke a sense of opulence and tranquility. Other gemstones like aquamarine, amethyst, morganite, and tourmaline offer a diverse palette of colors, allowing for personalised expression and unique symbolism in engagement rings.

Choosing a colored gemstone for an engagement ring can reflect individual preferences, birthstones, or significant personal meanings. Their durability and diverse color options make them a compelling choice for those seeking a distinctive and meaningful alternative to traditional diamond centerstones.

Furthermore, colored gemstones add a touch of personality and uniqueness to an engagement ring, allowing for a stunning and personal symbol of love and commitment. Their individuality, coupled with the symbolism behind each stone, creates a piece of jewellery that resonates deeply with the wearer.
