Reasonably Sourced Diamonds & Gemstones

Are your diamonds ethically sourced?

Yes, each stone we offer originates from trusted and reputable suppliers who
align with our commitment to transparency and ethical practices. Embracing the Kimberley Process, we contribute to preventing conflict diamonds, ensuring that 99.8% of the world's diamond supply remains conflict-free. Our dedication extends to excluding gemstones from conflict zones, while we expand our selection with lab-created diamonds guided by our experts.

Learn more about our ethical sourcing.

Will my consultant be a qualified gemmologist?

Yes, At Mak & Co., our consultants are certified gemmologists, ensuring a genuine depth of expertise in every aspect of diamonds, engagement rings, and fine jewellery. We understand that these are significant investments, and having knowledgeable guidance while making such decisions is crucial. Our qualified gemmologists are here to support you in making confident, informed, and wise choices.

What are blood diamonds and how can I avoid them?

Mak & Co. stands firmly against the trade and support of blood diamonds, which are sourced from regions controlled by factions opposing legitimate governments. These diamonds fuel illegal activities and conflicts, perpetuating violence and instability. We prioritise sourcing diamonds from legitimate and ethical channels that contribute positively to local economies by supporting education, infrastructure, and trade relationships. Embracing fair and lawful practices, we align with the UN's Kimberley Process initiative, prohibiting the international trade of conflict diamonds. Our commitment extends to partnering only with transparent and internationally respected diamond
suppliers.

What is the Kimberley Process and does this guarantee a conflict-free stone?

The Kimberley Process serves as a stringent regulatory framework, prohibiting the sale of diamonds from conflict zones. This includes stringent rules and regulations that countries like the UK must adhere to when transporting rough diamonds. Thanks to the Kimberley Process, an overwhelming majority—over 99%—of diamonds in the global market are sourced ethically and free from conflicts.

At Mak & Co., our commitment to ethical practices aligns with our firm support for the Kimberley Process. We exclusively offer diamonds sourced, cut, and traded in compliance with these regulations. Additionally, we prioritise partnering with globally renowned suppliers who uphold transparency and trustworthiness in their practices.

How do I ensure my diamond is 100% reasonably sourced and ethical?

Although the Kimberley Process has ensured that over 99% of natural diamonds in the global market are ethically sourced, you might opt for a lab-grown diamond for added peace of mind. Lab-grown diamonds, while sharing identical chemical structures and appearance to natural diamonds, offer various advantages.

One of the primary benefits of lab-grown diamonds is their ethical production process. Moreover, they are available at a cost that is typically 40% to 60% more affordable compared to naturally mined diamonds."

What are lab diamonds?

Lab diamonds are man-made alternatives to conventionally mined diamonds, recognised as 100% genuine diamonds indistinguishable from those formed naturally. These lab-grown diamonds simulate the natural diamond growth process under controlled laboratory conditions, utilising high pressure and heat.

Distinguishing between a natural and lab-grown diamond is quite challenging and requires specialised equipment like DiamondSure and DiamondView. These tools use UV radiation to detect subtle indications that a diamond was cultivated in a lab—details impossible to discern with the naked eye.

Due to their efficient production methods, lab diamonds are priced between 40% to 60% lower than naturally mined diamonds. Additionally, they ensure ethical production practices and demand significantly less land use compared to mining

How will I know I receive the diamond I selected?

At Mak & Co., we exclusively deal with GIA-certified natural diamonds, IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds and Mak Diamond Certified diamonds. Both GIA and IGI diamonds come with an engraved serial number, visible only under magnification, which corresponds to the diamond's certificate. It's advisable to verify the IGI or GIA number under a microscope before and after the diamond is set, whenever feasible.

For natural diamonds, we highly recommend choosing GIA-certified stones.

When it comes to lab-grown diamonds, IGI provides a more comprehensive analysis and grading than the current offerings from GIA. That's why we suggest considering either GIA or IGI certifications for lab-grown diamonds.

We also offer our own certification, Mak Diamond Certificate (MDC) which carries out further guarantees which GIA or IGI will not.

What is the (MDC) Mak Diamond Certificate?

The Mak Diamond Certificate - MDC certifies the authenticity, integrity and grades of your Mak & Co. diamond, and is backed by our Lifetime Warranty.

Other diamond reports, including those from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), do not carry such guarantees and even carry disclaimers that the contents of the reports, including diamond grades, may differ if the diamond is examined in the future.

Mak & Co. not only maintains one of the highest grading standards but also holds itself accountable for the accuracy of its diamond grades. With a reputation to uphold to our clients around the world, we have only the best of the best gemologists ready to dedicate hours of scrutinising and examining every gemstone with the best and newest gemological equipment out there.

Learn more about MDC

Are your diamonds GIA certified?

Yes, the natural diamonds we handle are GIA certified. We specifically opt for GIA certified diamonds due to their reputation as the most rigorous and precise grading laboratory globally, and because the GIA operates as a non-profit organisation.

Regarding lab diamonds, we offer both GIA and IGI certified options based on your personal preference. This choice is influenced by the fact that while the GIA doesn't currently provide as detailed and specific grading standards for lab diamond clarity or color, the IGI does

Do you buy or sell second hand diamonds or jewellery?

No, we do not engage in the buying or selling of second-hand diamonds or jewellery. To ensure complete transparency and certainty of their origins, we exclusively collaborate with trusted diamond and metal suppliers, eliminating the possibility of buying or reselling second-hand diamonds or jewellery.

While we can often incorporate heirloom diamonds or precious gemstones into new bespoke jewellery (not for resale), we are unable to reuse metal from existing jewellery due to concerns regarding its purity. Our team of gemmologists will assess the suitability of heirloom diamonds or gemstones for resetting purposes

Can I choose any gemstones for an engagement ring or precious jewellery?

Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds stand out as the ideal gemstones for engagement rings. Their durability is key, making them resilient enough for everyday wear. Among these, diamonds take the lead as the hardest gemstones, highly resistant to chipping, scratching, or breakage. Following closely are sapphires and rubies, known for their robustness, and then emeralds.

For those seeking alternatives, several gemstones offer durability and beauty suitable for daily wear. These include aquamarine, morganite, spinel, topaz, and tourmaline, maintaining a good level of durability despite being slightly less hard than the traditional choices.

Engagement Rings

I need to keep my order a secret, can you help?

Certainly! We always prioritise discretion in our communication and delivery processes to maintain confidentiality throughout. Our deliveries won't display 'Mak & Co.' or 'jewellers,' and you'll receive timely updates regarding your delivery schedule. We'll reach out beforehand to confirm a suitable delivery date and furnish your tracking code once your ring is en route.

For additional precautions in keeping your engagement ring order confidential:

  1. Ensure the email used for communication isn't logged into shared devices.
  2. We may call unless you prefer email-only communication—please let us know.
  3. Avoid using a shared card to place the order.
  4. Refrain from asking your partner about their ring size or bringing in a ring for measurement; we can make well-informed estimates based on their height, clothing size, and photos. Additionally, we provide free resizing if needed.

Can you make a ring with a diamond or gemstone I already have?

Certainly! In most cases, we can set a stone you already possess, such as a cherished family heirloom diamond. However, there are instances where stones might not be suitable for resetting, and our gemmologists will need to assess the stone's condition before confirming the reset.

We advise against purchasing diamonds from unreliable sources. At times, clients acquire diamonds elsewhere that fail to match their assigned grading, leading to paying higher prices for stones that don't align with their documented grade.

For setting diamonds or gemstones acquired from other sources, we apply a handling, insurance, and setting fee. The fee varies based on the stone's size, quality, and value, starting from £300.

To explore further or check the feasibility of resetting your stone, please contact our Customer Care team, who will be delighted to assist you.

How much should I spend on a ring?

Determining your budget for a ring is a personal choice, and we accommodate a wide range of budgets for crafting rings. For instance, a simple 0.30ct diamond solitaire engagement ring starts at around £1,400. Costs vary depending on design complexity, diamond size, and quantity.

There are no strict rules regarding the ideal spending amount for an engagement ring. If you have a rough budget and design concept in mind, our Customer Care team can provide insights into the diamond sizes within that range. Feel free to reach out to us for further discussion and guidance.

For more guidance, follow our Setting A Budget guide.

Can you make my engagement ring and wedding ring set at the same time?

Absolutely! We're able to create your engagement ring and wedding ring set simultaneously. Many prefer to ensure both rings fit seamlessly together, and our goldsmiths often need your engagement ring during the crafting process to achieve this alignment. If you're not yet prepared to purchase your wedding ring, we can accommodate this at a later date!

How long will my ring take to make?

Ring crafting usually spans 4 to 5 weeks.

For in-store orders, simpler designs might be crafted within a shorter timeframe. Kindly inform your consultant if you need the ring urgently to determine the best options available to meet your timeline.

Will my engagement ring come in a box to propose with?

Absolutely! Every Mak & Co. ring is accompanied by a complimentary ring box. Our boxes boast a plush, luxurious feel with an off-white satin finish, ensuring an elegant presentation for your special ring.

Can I engrave my engagement ring?

Certainly! We offer engraving services for your ring, either before or after your proposal. However, if resizing is necessary, re-engraving might be required. Hence, opting to engrave after the proposal when the ring size is confirmed might be preferable.

Our rings feature hand-engraved inscriptions in a classic script font style. Engravings are limited to 25 characters and are available for a flat rate of £75. You can include this service with your online order or discuss it during an in-store consultation with your consultant.

How can I guess my partner's ring size?

If unsure about your partner's ring size, our experts can make an informed estimate using correlations between clothing size, height, and ring size. Additionally, if you have a clear photo showing your partner's hand, it can aid our consultants in getting the size right.

In the event the ring doesn't fit perfectly, we offer complimentary resizing for your Mak & Co. ring. Since proposals are often a surprise, we'll invite you and your partner to visit our store after the proposal. This allows us to accurately measure the ring size and make any necessary adjustments for the ideal fit.

Read our full Ring Size guide.

I need a ring ASAP, can you help?

Absolutely! Our standard crafting time for rings is 4 to 5 weeks, yet some simple staple designs can be crafted in a shorter duration—please inquire with your consultant for specifics.

Moreover, we offer ready-to-wear engagement rings with quicker turnarounds available for selection. Alternatively, you might consider choosing and proposing with a loose diamond. Later, you can return with your partner to design the ring together—a wonderfully romantic gesture!

Wedding Rings

How long will my wedding ring take to make?

Wedding rings typically require 4 to 5 weeks for crafting from the order placement and finalization of details.

We recommend planning your wedding ring purchase around two to three months before your wedding date. This timeframe, whether purchasing online or in-store, allows ample time for decision-making, crafting, and ensures you receive your rings well in advance of your special day.

How long before my wedding should I book an appointment?

We suggest scheduling your initial wedding ring consultation approximately 2 to 3 months ahead of your wedding. Typically, the crafting process for your rings takes 4 to 5 weeks from the finalization of all decisions. This timeline allows flexibility for multiple appointments, decision-making, and ensures sufficient time for collection or delivery well in advance of your special day.

We need our wedding rings ASAP, can you help?

Absolutely! For couples with tighter timelines, we offer options to accommodate their needs. While our made-to-order rings typically require
4 to 5 weeks for crafting, we also feature a range of ready-to-wear wedding rings that might suit your requirements. Feel free to reach out to us with your desired ring style and ring size, and our Customer Care team can provide details about available in-store options that align
with your preferences.

How much will our wedding rings cost?

Wedding ring prices vary, beginning around £315 for a 2mm plain band. Thicker bands or incorporating diamonds will result in higher costs for your ring.

Setting your wedding ring budget is a personal decision. It's advisable to research various wedding ring designs to gauge their costs, prioritize your preferences, and then establish a budget that aligns with your preferences and requirements.

How do I find my wedding ring size?

While we can precisely measure your ring size in-store, if an in-person appointment isn't feasible, we're still here to assist. Wedding ring sizes often correlate with height and clothing size, allowing our consultants to assist you in estimating your ring size during your online consultation.

Will our wedding rings come with a ring box?

Absolutely! Every Mak & Co. ring is accompanied by a complimentary ring box. Our boxes boast a plush, luxurious feel with an off-white satin finish, ensuring an elegant presentation for your special ring.

Can we have our wedding rings engraved?

Certainly! We offer engraving services for your ring, either before or after your wedding.

Will my wedding ring and engagement ring fit together?

Yes, our usual practice involves designing both engagement and wedding rings to sit flush together. For in-store purchases, we require the engagement ring during the crafting process to ensure perfect alignment, proportion, and a seamless fit.

However, not all engagement rings are inherently designed to accommodate a traditional wedding ring that sits flush against the band. In such instances, we suggest opting for a shaped wedding ring.

Alternatively, consider booking an in-store appointment to create a custom-made wedding ring that perfectly complements your engagement ring!

Can you match my wedding ring to my engagement ring bought elsewhere?

Absolutely, we can coordinate your wedding ring to complement an engagement ring purchased elsewhere. Our consultants will offer design advice to ensure a harmonious match between the two rings. Additionally, for crafting purposes, we might require your engagement ring to guarantee a perfect flush fit between the rings.

This service is available exclusively for in-store consultations, as our experts need to visually assess your engagement ring to provide optimal guidance.

What if the diamond I selected online is no longer available?

Occasionally, there might be a delay in our inventory updates. If the stone you've selected is no longer available when you place your order, we'll promptly notify you. Rest assured, we'll work closely with you to present the best available alternative options that align with your preferences.

How much do I pay upfront when I place my order?

When placing an order through our physical store, phone, or email, we do require an initial deposit to commence crafting your ring. You have the option to make a deposit of either 25% or 50% of the total amount. However, if you're making an online purchase, the full payment is required to finalise the order.

Pricing & Payment

How do you price your engagement rings and jewellery?

We understand the importance of clarity when it comes to pricing. Our bespoke jewellery, including engagement rings and wedding bands, follows a transparent pricing structure. For our signature engagement ring designs, the fee encompasses the metalwork, any melee diamonds utilized, and the crafting hours required. The cost of the central diamond or gemstone is an additional charge.

This consistent approach extends to our bespoke pieces, where we employ flat fees for tailored modifications. Our wedding ring designs similarly have straightforward pricing.

Our aim is to deliver exceptional bespoke craftsmanship at the most equitable rates. Crafting our pieces in-house allows us to eliminate intermediaries, maintain high-quality standards, and ensure fair pricing for our valued clients.

Which payment methods do you accept?

Mak & Co. accepts the following payment methods:

Once I’ve received a quote, can the price change?

When you receive a quotation during a consultation, it remains fixed for a period of 14 days. If you decide not to proceed with the order within this timeframe, the subsequent quote you receive may reflect any fluctuations in diamond or metal prices. Our aim is to maintain pricing consistency, and orders placed within the standard quotation period will be honored.

Your quotation details will be stored on our system for a duration of 3 months.

Are there any hidden charges for bespoke orders?

Absolutely not! We're committed to transparency and ensuring you're aware of the exact price before you confirm your order.

There are no hidden fees for bespoke orders. The pricing structure for our bespoke pieces aligns with our classic designs. For instance, the metalwork cost for a solitaire ring remains consistent at £700, regardless of whether it's a classic design or your unique creation. Any additional features like diamond-set bridges or engravings come with a predetermined flat fee, which your consultant will detail during the quotation phase.

Jewellery Care

What does your complimentary aftercare include?

At Mak & Co., every purchase includes a lifetime offer of free cleaning and polishing services. It's good practice to clean your jewellery regularly at home and consider a professional polish every 3 to 5 years or when you notice the metal could benefit from a refresh. Over-polishing can affect the metal's strength, so we'll advise you accordingly when considering it.

You're welcome to visit our Mak & Co. stores anytime for a professional clean of your items. Just reach out to schedule an appointment

You're entitled to three complimentary resizes for your ring. It's advisable to avoid excessive resizing as it can weaken the metal.

Additionally, we offer a free servicing appointment every one to two years to assess your item's condition and carry out any necessary work. If your item is damaged or needs attention, please notify us promptly, although there might be a charge for repairing items damaged while outside our care.

How can I clean my jewellery at home?

  1. Get a bowl and add a few drops of washing liquid. Fill it with very warm water. (Diamonds can withstand high temperatures, but be cautious not to scald yourself.) Have a soft-bristled toothbrush and a clean cloth or tea towel ready.
  2. Place your jewellery in the bowl and let it soak for ten minutes. Avoid cleaning your ring under running water near an open drain to prevent accidents. Soaking in warm water with washing liquid will help break down oils and dirt.
  3. After soaking, use the toothbrush to gently brush away any remaining dirt. Remember to brush behind the diamond and beneath the setting, if your ring design permits. While diamonds are durable, metals like platinum and gold can get scratched, so use gentle strokes with a soft toothbrush.

How can I avoid damaging my jewellery?

Remove your jewellery when engaging in physical activities that could potentially damage them, such as weightlifting, rowing, or any activity involving heavy grasping. Avoid clapping your hands together while wearing jewellery, as this can deform the metal.

Using abrasive cleaners like Cif or tools like scrubbies can scratch metalwork, so take care to remove your jewellery before using these products and store them securely.

We highly advise insuring your engagement ring or valuable jewellery to protect against damage, theft, or loss. Experts that specialise in jewellery insurance, or you can consider adding these items to your home contents insurance plan.

Can I return an engagement ring if the recipient doesn't like it?

Absolutely, if your item falls within the scope of our 40-day Returns Policy, you have the option to return it for a full refund or opt for a redesign at no additional cost. However, do keep in mind that adding specific design elements or embellishments, such as a diamond-set bridge or halo, may involve standard additional costs.

Can I alter my item without returning it?

Yes, certain alterations can be made to items, although the extent of alterations may vary depending on the item itself and the specific changes desired. Simple modifications such as resizing a ring or incorporating an engraving are usually manageable without much difficulty. However, more complex alterations might necessitate redesigning and remaking the item. Feel free to get in touch with us to discuss the alterations you have in mind for your item and to learn more about the possibilities available.

My ring doesn’t fit, can you resize it?

Absolutely! We provide complimentary resizing services for all Mak & Co. rings up to three times throughout their lifetime. Our resizing can adjust the ring size up or down by a maximum of three sizes. Typically, most adjustments require only one or half a size alteration.

While you might need a resizing initially if the ring doesn't fit perfectly upon receipt, keep in mind that finger sizes can change over time, especially after events like pregnancy. Do remember that we're unable to resize rings purchased from other jewellers.
